All YLE channels now available on Viasat via the SIRIUS satellite

14 Jun, 2005

Viasat has signed an agreement with Finnish public service broadcaster YLE for the distribution of all YLE's digital channels via the Sirius satellite system. As a result, YLE's channels will now become available to every household in Finland.

The entire digital programme offering, featuring five TV channels and four radio channels, of Finnish public service broadcaster YLE, can now be seen throughout Finland via Sirius satellite. The channels are part of Viasat's programming package and will be automatically available to all Viasat subscribers. Broadcasting began already last Friday, 10 June.

The Sirius satellite system has become the common platform for Nordic and Baltic public service programming and with the entry of YLE, most of the countries' public service channels are represented on the satellite. Heikki Seppälä, Director of Programming at YLE, is satisfied with the multi-year agreement and says:

"YLE's channels shall be broadcast from all platforms that our viewers use. Those who choose to watch digital TV via satellite shall also be able to watch their national TV using that route. This is important as we face the shutdown of the analogue terrestrial network in 2007.

Fredrik Markelin, CEO of Viasat Finland, believes that the agreement with YLE will give the programme offering a boost:

"YLE was the missing piece of the puzzle in our package of entertainment, infotainment, films and sport. Now we can offer greater diversity, in which monitoring of Finnish news and society are particularly important. Viasat now offers the viewers an excellent alternative when choosing their digital distribution form when Finland switches to digital TV in the terrestrial net.”

NSAB-Sirius' Finnish representative, Benita Österberg, sees the future in the agreement and hopes that viewers with special needs and interests also check out the other services available on SIRIUS:

"We broadcast digital TV and radio channels, but subscribers also have the opportunity to receive broadband via Sirius. This service is particularly attractive to people who live in rural areas or work from their holiday homes. We are also “future safe” when it comes to future TV standards like HDTV (Hight Definition TV)”.
